JULY 1974

The establishment of the Standing Committee of Caribbean Statisticians (SCCS) endorsed by Heads of Government

In 1974, one year after the establishment of CARICOM, and recognising the importance of Statistics in Regional Integration, Heads of Government endorsed the resolution from the Fourth Meeting of the Common Market Council to establish the Standing Committee of Caribbean Statisticians (SCCS).

Its mandate, to foster increased recognition of the importance of adequate statistical services to the countries of the Region; to widen the scope and coverage of statistical data collection; and to improve the quality, comparability and timeliness of statistics produced. Today, the SCCS continues to serve as the highest decision-making authority on statistical matters within CARICOM, guiding the development and coordination of regional statistical activities.

2001

5th Meeting of the Community Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) discusses Strategic Direction for Statistics

The Council noted the approach to enable a strategic direction for the development of statistics within CARICOM, including efforts to harmonise statistics in the Region; to document statistical methodologies and the processes of data collection and compilation; and to enhance the ability to effectively depict the socio-economic status of CARICOM Member States through the establishment of a core set of socio-economic statistics.

2005

15th Meeting of the Community Council: Approval of Regional Statistics Work Programme

The Council approved the common Regional Statistical Work Programme (RSWP).

Recommendation for Strategies and Financial Proposals: It was recommended that both regional and national strategies should be prepared, along with financial proposals, to facilitate the implementation of the RSWP.

2016

37th Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government (37HGC): High-Level Endorsement of the Action Plan for Statistics

Heads of Government endorsed the Action plan aimed to enhance statistical systems and capabilities within CARICOM. This endorsement reinforced the importance of statistics as central to the integration movement.

2017

38th Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government (38HGC): High-Level Endorsement

Approval to Advance the Preparation of the CARICOM Regional Strategy for the Development of Statistics (RSDS): This step was crucial for the structured development of statistical frameworks.

2018

39th Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government (39HGC): High-Level Endorsement of the CARICOM RSDS

The strategy was officially endorsed, marking a significant milestone in regional statistical development, and giving the Member States and the Secretariat the authorisation to proceed with the implementation of the CARICOM RSDS.

44th Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) approval of CARICOM core SDG Indicators

Approval of 125 Unique CARICOM Core SDGs: COHSOD approved a set of 125 core Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) tailored for the CARICOM region.

June 2021

45th Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD)adoption of GEI

Adoption of CARICOM Gender Equality Indicators (GEI): COHSOD agreed to adopt and use these indicators to monitor and evaluate progress towards gender equality at the national level.

March 2022

33rd Intersessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government: Agreement to Develop a Proposal for a Regional Population Commission

This proposal was to be developed in collaboration with technical experts from Member States and would aim to address population-related issues more effectively by developing a Draft Population Policy

November 2024

CARICOM Year of Statistics (YoS): Year of Statistics endorsed and declared by the Prime Ministers of Belize and Grenada at the Fourth High-Level Advocacy Forum on Statistics which was held on 4 November 2024 in Belize. 

It was agreed that the observance of the Year of Statistics in CARICOM would be from November 2024 to 2025 under the theme “Improving Lives through Statistics, Strengthening and Innovating Together”.
