This is the second edition of a report which originally started out as an attempt to make available for both internal and external users, key economic indicators of CARICOM Member States in a single publication. However, as that earlier report developed and the problems of compiling a consistent and reliable data set across all Member States were exposed, the publication grew into an attempt to bring to the fore the issues of harmonisation of statistics in the Region. This report then continues in a similar manner,highlighting issues in the data and presenting updated indicators.

The CARICOM Environment in Figures report offers a comprehensive overview of the state of the environment across the CARICOM region. It highlights key environmental issues, supported by detailed data presented in tables and charts, along with expert commentary to provide context and insights. This National Accounts report is the sixth to be prepared by the Statistics Sub-programme of the Information and communication Division and is to be published every two years. However, it is hoped that during this interval, data compiled from Member States will be available on our Web page. The last two reports contained data for the period 1980 – 1994 and 1980 – 1996. Data for The Bahamas at current prices for the period 1990 – 1995 are provisional while no data were available at Constant prices.

The monitoring of the performance of the CSME is only possible if there is a core set of statistics that are comparable and timely. Hence, the analysis in this report takes the form of a presentation of the conceptual framework of the data to assess the current status of the economic statistical system and to identify the gaps and deficiencies that can militate against the achievement of this goal of harmonisation of statistics in the CARICOM Region.
