This report presents data up to 2014, where available, and draws on contributions from Member States and Associate Members, the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), and other regional and national organizations, including the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA).

This edition reflects the ongoing capacity-building efforts undertaken since the UNSD/CARICOM project to strengthen environmental statistics in the region. It also provides more detailed data to meet the needs of analysts, policymakers, and trade negotiators.

Third Edition

The CARICOM Environment in Figures – 2009 Edition is the third report in the field of environmental statistics produced by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, Regional Statistics Programme.

Covering the period 2005 to 2009, this report also includes data from the 2010 Round of Population and Housing Censuses for countries where such information was available. The publication draws on data provided by Member States and Associate Members, the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), and other regional and national organizations, including the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) and the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC).

Second Edition

The CARICOM Environment in Figures 2004 report was prepared by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, Statistics Sub-programme, using data submitted by Member States and Associate Members, the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), and other regional and national organizations.

This publication is the second in its series on environmental statistics for the CARICOM Region, following the first report, which presented data up to 2002.

The development of environmental statistics in the region was driven by the project “Strengthening Capacity in the Compilation of Statistics and Indicators for Conference Follow-up in the CARICOM Region”, jointly undertaken by the UNSD and the CARICOM Secretariat between 1999 and 2003.

First Edition

The CARICOM Environment in Figures report offers a comprehensive overview of the state of the environment across the CARICOM region. It highlights key environmental issues, supported by detailed data presented in tables and charts, along with expert commentary to provide context and insights.

In addition to addressing major environmental themes, the publication also assesses the status of environmental statistics in the region, identifying significant data gaps. Such gaps are not unique to CARICOM — they are common in many parts of the world. Contributing factors include the absence of consistent environmental data collection, scattered or one-time data efforts, limited access to environmental data by national statistical offices, and the lack of institutionalized environmental statistics systems within countries.
