2000 ROUND OF POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS DATA ANALYSIS SUB-PROJECT

The analysis of the Census was funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) through the CARICOM Capacity Development Programme (CCDP).

The Caribbean Community Council of Ministers, acting on the advice and recommendations of the Standing Committee of Caribbean Statisticians (SCCS), in February 2000, approved the use of a regionally coordinated approach for the 2000 Round of Population and Housing Censuses.

The strategy included an activity on the Analysis and Dissemination of Census Data and Results, which comprised the preparation of National Census Reports (NCRs) and Regional Special Topic Monographs (RSTMs).

Fourteen (14) Member States and four (4) Associate Members participated in the Programme. Their participation in the Regional Census Programme reflects a shared recognition of the value and efficiency of regional cooperation and coordination in the conduct of censuses, as well as the importance of producing comparable, high-quality socio-economic data to support effective planning, improve the quality of life, and advance the overall development of the Region.

The Census Data Analysis Project was designed to address an identified gap within the Region, and specifically within national statistical systems, in the area of demographic and population analysis, thereby strengthening the evidence base for policy formulation and decision-making.

The key deliverables of the Project included eighteen (18) National Census Reports; five (5) Regional Special Topic Monographs; a volume of Basic Tables; the training of personnel in demographic analysis through a seven-week workshop facilitated by The University of the West Indies (UWI); and the establishment of an online facility to facilitate access to census data for users engaged in analysis, research, policy development, and decision-making.

National Census Reports (NCRs)

The National Census Reports (NCRs) were prepared by writers from the Region with expertise in demography, with two reviewers from The University of the West Indies (UWI) ensuring the quality and soundness of the publications. Following review and comments from the respective National Statistical Offices, and in consultation with the writers and reviewers, the reports were finalised by the CARICOM Secretariat.
