CARICOM CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (CCDP)

2000 ROUND OF POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS DATA ANALYSIS SUB-PROJECT

In collaboration with the CANADIAN INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AGENCY (CIDA)

The Caribbean Community Council of Ministers, acting on the advice and recommendations of the Standing Committee of Caribbean Statisticians (SCCS), in February 2000, approved the use of a regionally coordinated approach for the 2000 Round of Population and Housing Censuses.

The strategy included an activity on the Analysis and Dissemination of Census Data and Results, which comprised the preparation of National Census Reports (NCRs) and Regional Special Topic Monographs (RSTMs).

Fourteen Member States and four Associate Members participated in the programme. The participation of these countries in the Regional Census programme was in recognition of the value and economy of regional co-operation and coordination in executing the Censuses and for the production of comparable, high quality socio-economic data, useful in planning, and improving the quality of life and in achieving overall progress of the peoples of the Region.

The analysis of the Census was funded by the Canadian International Development Agency
(CIDA) through the CARICOM Capacity Development Programme (CCDP).

The Census Data Analysis project was aimed at filling the gap existing in the Region and specifically, within the national statistical systems in the area of demographic and population analysis, thereby enabling its use in policy and decision-making.
